GHK-Cu (glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine copper) is a small copper-binding tripeptide that occurs naturally in human plasma, saliva and urine, and its levels fall sharply with age. It is studied for collagen production, wound healing, skin firmness and, more tentatively, hair growth, and patients commonly report visible skin-texture improvements. What is GHK-Cu?
GHK-Cu was identified in 1973 when researchers noticed that a fraction of human plasma made older liver tissue behave more like young tissue. The active piece turned out to be a three-amino-acid sequence (glycine, histidine, lysine) that binds copper tightly. Commonly cited estimates suggest plasma GHK-Cu falls by more than half between a person's twenties and sixties, which is a large part of why it is discussed in the context of skin aging.
In laboratory and animal work, GHK-Cu appears to deliver copper to enzymes that build and cross-link collagen, stimulate fibroblasts to produce collagen, elastin and glycosaminoglycans, recruit repair and immune cells to injured tissue, and dampen inflammatory signaling. Gene-expression studies suggest it shifts a broad set of genes toward a repair pattern, and that mechanism lines up with the visible changes many patients describe.
Evidence and patient experience differ somewhat by route. Topical GHK-Cu has decades of cosmetic use, a number of small human trials showing improvements in fine lines, firmness and wound closure, and patients regularly describe visible changes in skin texture within weeks. Injectable GHK-Cu is newer ground: formal controlled human trials are still catching up, and claims for injections lean more on topical and laboratory data, which is why federal regulators have treated the two routes differently — a distinction worth discussing with your nurse practitioner.

Hair growth
Laboratory and animal studies show GHK-Cu can enlarge hair follicles and lengthen the growth phase, and copper-peptide shampoos and topicals are widely marketed. Injectable GHK-Cu came off the FDA's restricted list in April 2026 but has not been added to a compounding list, so its availability depends on the individual pharmacy.
