MICRONEEDLING

What does microneedling do for your face?

Your skin has a natural ability to heal and repair itself, which is why most minor injuries and cuts to the skin can be easily healed. Microneedling utilizes this natural ability. When just a small amount of stimulation is applied to the skin in just the right way, it triggers your skin to create the substances, causing it to produce the healing substances that give it a brighter, tighter, more youthful look, making it look new again. Microneedling (or collagen induction therapy) is a procedure that involves pricking the skin with tiny sterilized needles. The small puncture wounds stimulate the  growth and production of more collagen and elastin, which heals your skin and helps you look younger by filling in fine lines, improving acne scars, smoothing out large pores, and brightening the skin. The result is a fresher-looking you with plumper, smoother, and more youthful-looking skin.

How effective is microneedling?

According to the National Library of Medicine’s article “Microneedling: Advances and widening horizons” by Singh and Yadav:

“Microneedling is a very simple, safe, effective, and minimally invasive therapeutic technique. It was initially introduced for skin rejuvenation, however, now it is being used for a very wide range of indications including acne scar, acne, post-traumatic/burn scar, alopecia, skin rejuvenation, drug delivery, hyperhidrosis, stretch marks, and many more. Moreover, during the last 10 years, many new innovations have been made to the initial instrument, which was used for microneedling. This technique can be combined with other surgical techniques to provide better results. In particular, it is a very safe technique for dark skin types, where risk of postinflammatory pigmentation is very high with other techniques that damage the epidermis. In this review article, we are updating on the different instruments now available for this procedure, and its efficacy when performed alone or in combination with other techniques for various indications.”

“Microneedling is a relatively new minimally invasive procedure involving superficial and controlled puncturing of the skin by rolling with miniature fine needles. Over a short period of time, it has gained mass popularity and acceptance as it is a simple, cheap, safe, and effective technique requiring minimal training. Traditionally used as a collagen induction therapy for facial scars and skin rejuvenation, it is also widely used now as a transdermal delivery system for therapeutic drugs and vaccines. In this review, we highlight the constantly evolving research and developments in microneedling techniques, instruments, and its applications in dermatology.”

Is microneedling good for your skin?

VERY! Collagen is one of the healing substances that are triggered from microneedling. It is a very important protein to your skin, tendons, muscles, bones, and other body parts. Collagen helps to hold all of your tissues together and helps to allow movement. Collagen is the substance that keeps the skin plump, pliable, and supple. Without collagen, the skin can start to loosen and begins to create hollow areas.  Most people have microneedling treatments done to the face, but it is just as effective on other parts of the body, such as your stomach or thighs.

How long does a microneedling treatment take?

The procedure usually takes about 10-20 minutes, depending on the size of the area you’re treating.

It takes a bit of time to notice a difference, but you will feel a remarkable difference after the first few treatments. The reason it takes time is due to the fact that your body is healing itself. Again, most people need a few treatments before they see results.

It may take days or weeks to heal, depending on how deep the needles pierce your skin. The needles used in at-home treatments don’t penetrate as deeply, so the results aren’t as noticeable and isn’t as effective and may take more treatments. You will see better results from the procedures done by aestheticians and doctors as the needles professionals use – penetrate the skin to a deeper level.

What should I expect during a microneedling treatment?

First, a numbing cream is smoothed onto your skin so you can’t feel the needle pricks. The clinician will then move a rolling or pen-shaped tool with tiny needles over your skin. The needles make micro cuts in your skin, which causes a bit of bleeding. Your body’s healing process sends collagen and elastin to patch up the tiny injuries. Collagen helps fill in and smooth out wrinkles. Your doctor may spread a cream or serum on your face after that.

How long does it take to heal from a microneedling treatment?

Since microneedling penetrates and makes micro cuts into the skin, you may have some minor pain after the procedure, and your skin may be red for a few days. As your skin goes through the healing process, your skin may feel tight and flake a bit. With at-home treatments, there’s usually no bleeding. However, deep microneedling treatments may cause the skin to bleed or bruise. Since microneedling creates tiny punctures in the skin, it is possible for germs to enter, especially if the equipment isn’t cleaned well. However, the risk of infection is very low (which is why it is best to have it performed by one of our professionals). If you’re healthy, an infection from microneedling is very unlikely.
